Under the 2026–27 NFHS rules, a team that scores and is still trailing may choose to keep the ball. It takes over on fourth down at its own 20-yard line. 8-3-9 EXCEPTION
What normally happens
After a try, the other team gets the ball at its own 14-yard line. There are no kickoffs. 8-3-9 · 4-1-1
The new option
If the scoring team is trailing in score, it can elect to keep possession instead. It starts on fourth down, on its own 20-yard line. All the rules for a scrimmage down apply, timing included. 8-3-9 EXCEPTION
- 1Only a team that's still behind after scoring gets the choice.
- 2It's an option, not an automatic new set of downs. It's one fourth-down play from the 20.
- 3The same choice applies after a successful field goal, in states that adopt field goals. 8-4-3 EXCEPTION
Why it's in the rules
The NFHS committee added it for 2026–27 so a team that's behind can try a high-risk play to keep possession after a score.

Only a team that's still trailing can keep it. You're ahead, so the other team gets the ball at its own 14-yard line.
